So, what’s the story?
A competing mob boss hits the Bertinelli crime family at Helena Bertinelli’s gold medal party. Only she and her cousin Enzio survive. Before escaping the burning home, Helena grabs an item from her deceased father’s safe. It’s an account of all his criminal activities, with a note asking that she turn this information over to the police. Instead, she opts to become a vigilante and take down her father’s remaining operations. She first strikes at a covert money-counting operation. While successful, she catches the attention of Batman and Robin. Next, she hijacks a shipment of drugs and sends it into the East River, again catching the attention of the dynamic duo and the police. Batman presses a thug for information on the mysterious new vigilante, which leads him to Enzio, who tells all he knows. Later, Huntress is prepared to strike again, but Batman and Robin stop her. Batman had read her father’s book, and has informed the police of all the locations they should raid. He declares Huntress, as the mob calls her now, is a loose canon. Now that the police have raided all her father’s known “places of business,” Batman tells her the mission is complete, and she should “disappear.” Huntress must now learn to reconcile the two sides of her father to herself.
This is a fair adaption by Templeton of the post-Crisis/pre-Nu52 Huntress into the animated world. I feel this would have made a decent animated episode. My biggest complaint is with the character, and not the issue itself. Batman never approved of Huntress, claiming the whole “loose canon” thing, yet he lets other crazies run loose or takes them under his wing. Why so hostile against Huntress?
How’s the Art?
Kruse and Beatty redeem themselves a bit from last issue. The art is far more consistent this time, if not as polished as it could be. My only complaint is the size of Huntress’ head and hair. It’s huge!
Any continuity issues?
I don’t think so. I’d have to double-check the JLU episodes, but I think this works with those.
Anything of interest to customizers or cosplayers?
An animated-style post-Crisis Huntress is always a fun custom to make.
Is this issue worth my precious time?
Sure thing!
